DENTAL PLANS

Dental coverage that keeps you smiling

Original Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care, like cleanings, fillings, pulling teeth or dentures. Many health plans don’t either. A dental plan helps pay for the care you need to keep your teeth healthy, from routine checkups to bigger work.

HOW IT WORKS

How most dental plans work

Many plans split care into three groups and pay a different share for each. This is a common setup, but every plan is a little different.

Type of careExamplesWhat many plans pay
PreventiveCleanings, exams, X-raysOften 100%
BasicFillings, simple extractionsOften around 80%
MajorCrowns, bridges, dentures, implantsOften around 50%
KEY TERMS

Key terms to know

Annual maximum: The most the plan will pay in a year. After that, you pay the rest until the plan year starts over.
Deductible: What you pay before the plan starts paying for basic or major care. Preventive care often skips the deductible.
Waiting period: Some plans make you wait several months, or up to a year, before they cover basic or major work. Some plans have no waiting period.
Network: PPO plans let you see any dentist but save you more in network. DHMO plans usually require an in-network dentist but often cost less.

Questions I’ll check for you

Is your dentist in the network?
Is there a waiting period for the work you need?
Are dentures or implants covered?
Is the annual maximum high enough for your plans?
If you have Medicare Advantage, would your plan’s dental benefit be enough, or would a separate plan save you more?
